Wisconsin vs. Minnesota

Wisconsin Head Coach Greg Gard
Opening statement:

"As I told the team, it's been a rough two weeks, but I couldn't be more proud of the group of 17 young men that stuck together, really circled the wagons, had each other's back. They had to work through some tough times and to be able to come in here and play this way today against a really good Minnesota team, specifically in the second half. I think we were pretty good for most of the game, but the second half I thought we were terrific at times. Defensively, just the togetherness, the grittiness, that was us, that was us. I'm really proud and happy for our seniors obviously, but I'm really happy for everybody because they really rallied together and kept fighting to get through this. Hopefully we'll keep growing and now they have a better picture of who we are and how much fun it is when things go our way and make things happen and get ready for the Big Ten tournament."

On what sparked Vitto Brown's performance today:

"He was active, he smiled, he was having fun and enjoying it. That's what we talked about, just 'Hey, relax and go play.' I think the smile he had on his face when he hit the 3 coming down the floor. We tried to give him a couple more too, but it didn't work out. He's had to battle through some rough times, specifically shooting. But I thought he did a pretty good job on the glass, he ran the floor in transition, he was just really engaged. Everybody brought energy to it. There wasn't anybody who sucked any energy. The guys coming off the bench, I thought (D'Mitrik) Trice was really good in the first half when Bronson (Koenig) got two fouls. Just a terrific team win that makes it happy for Vitto and our other three seniors as well."

On Bronson Koenig's contributions lately:

"He hasn't lost confidence. He knows he's a good shooter and good shooters, even through tough times, have to maintain that confidence. He puts in a lot of time in the gym. He spends extra time after practice and I'm not sure what he does on his off days, but to be able to shoot it like that it doesn't happen without a lot of work. He's continuing to grow. He's become a better leader as he's going through his career here. Like I said earlier before I came in here, they've each had their own unique path here and they've each had their own unique journey through here. It's been a fun group to coach and I'm looking forward to having them for a lot more weeks yet."

Wisconsin Senior Bronson Koenig:
On his early fouls and time on bench:

"It was disheartening on senior night to pick up those two fouls and get sent to bench, but I did everything in my power to use all my energy to try to be the best coach from the bench that I could be and motivate those guys. I thought the guys did a good job picking me up."

On his legacy:
"I think there is some unfinished business we have, especially with our early exit last year in the big ten tournament. We want to take every day, every game seriously and get better every single day."

Wisconsin Senior Zak Showalter
On the team's strong second half:
"It was very encouraging. We are a dangerous team when we make shots. We shared the ball well tonight. It feels good to get that confidence back and going forward into the tournament that is what we need."

Wisconsin Senior Vitto Brown:
On making the 3-pointer after the struggles in the first half:
"It felt good. Ethan (Happ) passed it out to me and I heard him say, "Come on V" and I knocked it down at the point. I couldn't let him down."

Wisconsin Senior Nigel Hayes:
On getting a win on Senior Day:
"It feels great. I remember I was watching [Zach Bohannon] when he did his video and he thanked everyone he ever met in Madison. Then watching [Josh Gasser] and I joked around with him on it being the last time here and doing this. Now, here I am with the young guys like (D'Mitrik) Trice telling me this is my last time. It is beautiful to see and see everything we have accomplished. It shows how good of a team we are."

Minnesota Head Coach Richard Pitino
Opening Statement:
"First and foremost, I give a lot of credit to Wisconsin. I've got a lot of respect for those seniors. They've won a lot of games. Tip of the cap to them. I thought they played very, very well and I think that we played very, very poorly in the second half. Just offensively, no flow. I don't know if it was the foul trouble, I'm not sure, but we were not confident in what we were doing. We've got to learn from it, make sure we address it and then get excited about where we sit right now, because that's in a great spot."
On whether he was happy with Minnesota's defense on Bronson Koenig:
"No. I thought we played poor defense. He does a lot of coming off of a ball screen and pulls and we weren't up to the level of the screen. Now, he got cooking too. He's a really good player, but we weren't up to the level of the screen like we talked about."
On how high of a priority it was to guard the 3-point shot:
"It was pretty low in the second half. I think we played very, very poor defense in the second half. I mean, they hit 8-for-10 from 3. So, it wasn't very good. The execution was very, very poor. I felt we did not play an intelligent game today."
