Callie at the Catch: Last One, Fast One
May 04, 2017 | Women's Rowing
10 days, 2 hour, 53 minutes, and 20 seconds.
Whitewater, Wisconsin, native Callie Herbert will be giving regular updates this winter and spring from Porter Boathouse and wherever else rowing takes her and her teammates. A four-time swimming state qualifier in high school, the junior raced mainly as part of the second varsity eight last season, helping her boat to a top-10 finish at the 2016 NCAA Championships.Â
MADISON, Wis. -- This was the time left on our countdown clock until the Big Ten championships on Wednesday morning. Which means only a few more days of practicing, only a few more days to take those last perfect strokes as a boat, and only a few more days left with the seniors.
Â
"I couldn't be more excited to race next weekend," senior Amanda Morris proclaimed, "There's something special about Big Tens because it is a team title. We need every single one of our teammates and every boat in order to reach this goal we have talked about every day for the last four years, that we can win Big Tens," Amanda added, "but this year is special. We believe we can do it and everyone can feel it."
Â
We have more confidence this year than any other because of the incredible strength and depth we have on our team. And it all started with the senior class.
Â
The seniors have progressed through their four years at Wisconsin. They have gotten faster, stronger and have helped change the team atmosphere into what it is today, all while becoming leaders on the team.
Â
10 days, 2 hours, 53 minutes, and 20 seconds marks the time until their last Big Tens and for some, their last race as a Wisconsin Badger.
Â
Senior Lucia Kissinger is not sure how she's feeling about her final go, "I'm ridiculously pumped for Big Tens because this is what we've been training for all year, but it will be surreal being a Wisconsin rower at the start line and entering 'retirement' as we cross the finish."
Â
Just a short four years ago the seniors raced at the Big Ten championships as novices. "It feels like yesterday that I had my first race at Big Tens," Amanda Morris said. And now it will be her last.
Â
"I'll never race with the Wisconsin 'W' on my uniform again, so while I'm excited to race and throw down everything we've got, I wish I could extend it just a little bit longer," Lucia admitted.
Â
This senior class will definitely be missed and we cannot wait to go out there to race our final Big Ten championship with them. Like we always say, 'last one, fast one.'
