MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's rowing team officially made the cut and will send six boats to compete at the 2016 Intercollegiate Rowing Association National Championships, which take place June 3-5 on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, New Jersey.
Among the accepted crews for the Badgers are the varsity eight, second varsity eight, freshman eight, third varsity eight, varsity four and lightweight men's four.
The Badgers historically show great depth at the IRAs, but are looking for more out of their top entry, the varsity eight.
Last season, UW placed 15th of the 24 varsity eight crews that reached the IRAs, continuing a trend that has gone the wrong way after a fourth-place finish at the 2011 championships.
Wisconsin owns nine varsity eight victories all-time at the IRA, is one of just three schools to win a title since 2006 and one of four schools to do so since 1999. The Badgers' most recent win at the IRA came in 2008, and know there are steps to take to get back to that championships level.
"We are definitely on the rise, slowly," head coach Chris Clark said. "But now it is seeing how many steps we have actually taken."
The Badgers showed depth last season, grabbing fourth-place finishes in the freshmen eight and varsity four races, but still finished 13th in the Ten Eyck Trophy standings for the team title.
Wisconsin is looking for improvement across the board and a top-10 team finish would show tangible proof of that.
"I think guys are believing in themselves," senior James Letten said. "Guys are going out there and taking hits at each other. The competitiveness has really been driving a lot of people. We are very sure of our own ability now."
The conditions on Lake Mendota this spring have been excellent for practice and so the squad has comfortably put in the work. The number of practices for the season numbers in the hundreds, so now is the time to put into action what they've done over and over again.
"They think that when they get in a difficult situation, something special is required," Clark stated. "Generally, something special is special in a bad way. I don't want anything special. Just execute."
