Heads Up About Head Injuries
Take head injuries seriously or risk serious and permanent brain damage.
UW Health Sports Medicine physicians and staff want to be sure all athletes get that message.
"This is an injury to the brain that not only can cause headaches or dizziness but also
may result in long-lasting thinking problems," says Dr. David Bernhardt, UW Health Sports
Medicine physician and team physician for UW Badgers.

The Impact of ImPACT
UW Health Sports Medicine staff has been using an online test called ImPACT to collect baseline data about an athlete's cognitive skills before the season. When an
athlete has a concussion, the pre-injury data can be compared with post-injury data,
giving doctors an objective measurement of whether an athlete is ready to return to play.
Get the Facts
UW Health Sports Medicine experts - athletic trainer Joe Greene, Dr. David Bernhardt and Dr. David Smith - recently gave presentations and took questions to help parents and coaches understand the serious nature of concussions and HOW TO recognize symptoms, both obvious and obscure. Here's a recap of the presentations through the live updates we
posted.
