MADISON, Wis. – After leading the Badgers to second place at the Bill Dellinger Invitational, freshman Gabrielle Anzalone was honored as the Big Ten Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Week by the league on Tuesday.
The freshman finished the 5-kilometer course at the Bill Dellinger Invitational in 16 minutes, 57 seconds for a ninth-place finish.
Anzalone was the top-finishing true freshman in the invitational, and her finish pushed Wisconsin to its second-place finish in the 10-team field. This is the Grand Blanc, Mich., native’s second top-10 finish in three races this season.
Anzalone improved on her time from her last 5K race, the Badger Opener, by shaving over a minute off her 18:02 finish.
This marks the first weekly award in Anzalone’s career and the first for the Badgers so far in the season. Wisconsin’s last Runner of the Week was recent graduate Hanna Grinaker in 2008.
The Badgers are back in action Friday, Oct. 14, hosting the highly-anticipated Wisconsin adidas Invitational. The meet begins 1 p.m. (CT) at the Zimmer Championship Course.
