MADISON, Wis. -- After leading the Badgers to a fifth-place showing against tough competition on Friday at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown, Wisconsin sophomore Emma-Lisa Murphy was honored as the Big Ten Women's Cross Country Co-Runner of the Week by the league on Tuesday.
Murphy ran the 5-kilometer course at Franklin Park in Boston in 17 minutes 30 seconds to finish 10th in a race that featured four ranked teams, including then No. 1 Providence and No. 3 Oregon. Her time of 17:30 was a personal best time for the Whitefish Bay, Wis., native.
This marks the first time that Murphy has won the award. She has finished in the top-two for the Badgers in both of her races this season as she was second for UW and ninth overall at the season-opening Badger Opener.
"It is a great validation for Emma-Lisa," UW head coach Jim Stintzi said. "She is racing very well, and she is coming into her own right now. I hope her performance last weekend in Boston leads to great things in the future."
Last season, in her first collegiate race, Murphy was Wisconsin's top finisher at the Badger Opener and placed fourth for the Badgers at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational.
Murphy is the first Big Ten Women's Cross Country Runner of the Week honoree since Ashley Beutler was recognized on Sept. 25, 2012.
The Badgers are back in action Friday at the Titan Invitational, hosted by Illinois Wesleyan in Normal, Ill.
