MADISON, Wis. – With release of the 2014 cross country preseason rankings on Monday, the Wisconsin men’s and women’s cross country teams will enter their first meet of the season with high expectations—something the teams have come accustomed to living up to over the years.

The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) slotted the men’s squad at No. 2, while the women were ranked fourth in the Great Lakes Region.

The men’s rankings are led by Big Ten foe Indiana who finished fourth in 2013. Other conference teams included in the preseason poll are last year’s regional champion Michigan (3), Michigan State (5), Ohio State (6) and Purdue (8). Butler (4), Notre Dame (7), Akron (9) and Eastern Michigan (10) round out the top-10.

Wisconsin returns a solid core of runners with experience along with a talented freshman class, as it looks to reclaim the regional title it held for 13 of the last 15 years, including 11-straight from 2002-2012.

Malachy Schrobilgen will lead the team, beginning his redshirt sophomore season after winning the Big Ten cross country race and becoming the first Badger runner to earn both the Big Ten Athlete of the Year and Freshman of the Year awards. The Oak Park, Illinois, product capped his remarkable rookie campaign with first-team All-America honors at the NCAA championships.

Five Big Ten schools accompany the Badgers in the women’s Great Lakes Regional rankings including, Michigan (1), Michigan State (2), Ohio State (6), Indiana (7) and Purdue (11).

Junior Emma-Lisa Murphy heads into the season carrying first-team All-America recognition—an honor that had dodged Wisconsin women runners since 2010. Sarah Disanza will begin her sophomore season after finishing in the top two for the Badgers in every race she competed in.

The USTFCCCA national poll will be released on Tuesday.

The Wisconsin cross country teams will take to the course for the first time this season at home on Friday, Sept. 5 for the Badger Opener, held at the Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course. The meet is free to the public and begins at 5 p.m.
