MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin women's track and field and cross country athlete Hanna Knurr and men's rower Cody Rissman have been named inaugural recipients of the Big Ten Conference Postgraduate Scholarship, the league announced Thursday.
Knurr, a senior from Waterford, Wis., is a student in the PharmD program in the UW School of Pharmacy. She was a leader for the Badgers in cross country last fall and was UW's third finisher in the Big Ten championship (16th overall) and NCAA Great Lakes Regional (37th overall). She also competed for UW at the Big Ten indoor and outdoor championships this season. Between cross country and track, Knurr is a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and will finish her career with four All-Academic awards from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Rissman, a senior from Dekalb, Ill., graduated in December with degrees in biology and microbiology. He has been in the three seat of the varsity for the past two seasons. The Badgers' varsity eight is preparing for the 2013 Eastern Sprints this Sunday. Rissman's boat claimed a third-place finish at last year's regatta. Rissman is a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.
One male and one female student-athlete from each of the 12 Big Ten institutions who plan to continue their education in a graduate-degree program were awarded a $7,500 scholarship. Student-athletes must have been in their final season of NCAA eligibility, maintained at least a 3.2 grade-point average, demonstrated leadership qualities, served as an excellent role model and intend to continue their academic work beyond their baccalaureate degree in a graduate degree program.
