MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women’s cross country team was honored this week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as a 2012 Division I All-Academic team.
To qualify for the honor, a team must have a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.00 or better and have started at least five runners at its respective NCAA regional championship.
Wisconsin posted a team GPA of 3.34 while combining for an eighth-place finish at the 2012 NCAA Great Lakes Regional. The Badgers have earned USTFCCA All-Academic team honors for cross country in each of the last seven seasons.
Additionally, both UW senior Ashley Beutler and sophomore Gabrielle Anzalone received individual USTFCCCA All-Academic awards. The women maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better and placed in the top 15 at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
The award is the second consecutive All-Academic honor for Beutler, who is also a three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection in both cross country and track and field. She led the Badgers at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional with a fifth-place finish and closed out her collegiate career with a 65th-place finish at the 2012 NCAA Championship.
The award is Anzalone’s first USTFCCCA All-Academic selection. The 2011 Big Ten Co-Freshman of the Year, Anzalone wrapped up her sophomore season with a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional and placed 86th at the NCAA championship.
