MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women’s cross country team was honored this week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as a 2011 Division I All-Academic team.
To qualify for the honor a team must have a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.00 or better and have started at least five runners at their respective NCAA regional championship.
The Badgers posted a team GPA of 3.25 while combining for a 4th-place finish at the 2011 NCAA Great Lakes Regional. Wisconsin has earned USTFCCA All-Academic team honors for cross country in each of the last 6 seasons.
Individual athletes were also recognized with USTFCCCA All-Academic awards, including Badgers senior Caitlin Comfort and junior Ashley Beutler. Both women maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or better and placed in the top-15 at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
Beutler also is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection in both cross country and track and field. She took 12th overall at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional and led the Badgers at the 2011 NCAA Championship with a 107th-place finish.
Comfort is also no stranger to academic or athletic honors. She earned her second USTFCCCA All-Academic award in cross country to go along with a total of four Academic All-Big Ten awards between cross country and track and field.
The 2008 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Comfort wrapped up her cross country career with a second-place finish at the 2011 Big Ten Championship and went on to score a third-place finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. She finished 119th at the NCAA championship.
