LAST TIME: 2011 GREAT LAKES REGIONAL
• UW took fourth place as a team with 91 points – its highest finish and lowest score since 2008 -- and came in behind Toledo’s third-place total of 84. Michigan took the championship with 45 points, while Michigan State tallied a score of 77 to grab the runner-up spot.

• Leading the Badgers was senior captain Caitlin Comfort, with a third-place showing in 20:36.5 to guarantee herself an individual berth at the 2011 NCAA Championship.

• Comfort now holds the title of a four-time All-Great Lakes Region honoree. Her 2011 ticket the NCAAs will mark her fourth appearance in as many years at the national championship.

• Senior Kyla Chapman aided the Badgers’ fourth-place finish with a performance of 20:53.4 to come in second for UW and 11th overall, in only her second race under the Badger label.

• A third newcomer in UW’s top five finishers, sophomore Hanna Knurr, ran a time of 21:07 for 33rd place to round out Wisconsin’s scored finishes. Close behind was junior Ashley Beutler in 12th at 20:35.5.

• Freshman Gabrielle Anzalone was the third freshman to cross the finish line. Anzalone completed the course in 21:13.1.

• Wrapping up the team score was junior Hanna Knurr at 21:37.4 for 41st place.

UP NEXT: 2011 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP
• The Wisconsin women’s cross country team heads to Terre Haute, Ind., for their first NCAA championship since 2008.

• The women’s 6-kilometer race is set for 11:58 a.m. at LaVern Gibson Championship Course located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center.

• A live webcast of the championships will be broadcast from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.

COMFORT ZONE
• Senior Caitlin Comfort is UW’s returning All-Big Ten and All-Great Lakes Region performer from last season.

• Comfort has earned All-Big Ten laurels in each of her first three seasons and with this season’s second place at the Big Ten championship became Wisconsin’s first four-time All-Big Ten honoree since Bethany Brewster accomplished the feat from 1998 to 2001.

• Comfort began her UW career with a 198th-place effort at the 2008 NCAA Championship, fourth for the Badgers, helping them to their 19th-place finish.

• Comfort also is a four-time All-Great Lakes Region selection, including in 2010, when she finished sixth overall to qualify for her third NCAA championship appearance.

• Comfort was UW’s top finisher at four out of five races this season, the last major competition, the 2011 Great Lakes Regional, where she placed third to guarantee a fourth NCAA championship appearance outside of team results.

• Comfort placed 54th overall at the 2010 NCAA Championship with a time of 21:02.4.

ABOUT THE BADGERS
• Wisconsin enters competition ranked No. 25 in the latest national rankings by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

• The Badgers are one of 13 at-large teams selected to fill out the 31-team championship field. This marks the team’s 24th appearance at the national championship meet.

• The UW women are headed back to Terre Haute, Ind., for the fifth time in the city’s eight-year run as host of the NCAA meet, all of which have come under eighth-year head coach Jim Stintzi.

• Wisconsin had three top-20 NCAA finishes under Stintzi, including a fourth-place showing in 2006.

• Senior captain Caitlin Comfort look to her fourth-straight NCAA appearance, hoping to improve on last year’s 54th-place finish.

• Freshman Gabrielle Anzalone was named Big Ten co-Freshman of the Year after a 20th-place finish at the Big Ten championship. Anzalone’s honor makes eight Freshman of the Year awards in total for Wisconsin since the award debuted in 1987.

• Freshman Gabrielle Anzalone led the way for UW at Oregon’s Bill Dellinger Invitational on Oct. 1 with a ninth-place individual finish in 16:57 over the 5-kilometer course. For her efforts — her second team-leading finish in three career races — Anzalone was named Big Ten Women’s Runner of the Week. Anzalone also led the way for UW by winning the Badger Opener — her collegiate debut — on Sept. 9 at the Zimmer Course.

• Wisconsin hold two NCAA titles, claim as the runner-up as well as three individual NCAA champions, the most recent Erica Palmers winning run of 1999.

• UW is led by Jim Stintzi, who is in his eighth season as the Badgers’ head coach. Stintzi is a 1981 UW graduate.

BADGERS RANK NO. 25 NATIONALLY
• Wisconsin continued to move up in the standing as the season progresses. The Badgers are recognized this week in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association regional rankings.

• Now in week 10, Wisconsin has jumped to No. 25 in the national poll.

• They now sit behind fellow Great Lakes regional member Toledo. Florida State leads the rankings in the No. 1 spot heading into the NCAA championships.

• Five Big Ten teams hold top-30 ranks: No. 30 Minnesota, No. 25 Wisconsin, No. 21 Penn State, No. 15 Michigan State and No. 10 Michigan.
