Kelly Sheffield Quotes
Why did you choose to become Wisconsin's next head coach?
The University of Wisconsin is one of the elite jobs in our sport. Because of the conference, the academics, the administrative and fan support, and the facilities, it is a place where you can compete and win at the highest level. As I went through this process, it became clearer and clearer that everyone at Wisconsin has a strong desire to return to a championship level, and that absolutely fired me up.
What goals do you have for the program?
The Big Ten is the best volleyball conference in the country. Seven schools finished the season ranked in the top 25. There are great coaches and unbelievable talent up and down this conference. With that said, Wisconsin is a special place that will continue to attract special talent.
The goal is to compete for Big Ten championships -- as it should be at Wisconsin. If you are competing for Big Ten championships, that puts you in the top echelon of teams in the country, and that's where we want to be. But there's also a clear understanding that you have to immerse yourself in the process of getting better -- that's where the daily focus has to be.
What sort of volleyball should the fans be expecting from a Sheffield-coached team?
Hopefully Badger fans see a team that plays well together and players who look like they enjoy competing. We want to be a team that embraces challenges, fights through and responds appropriately to adversity, and has a tremendous will to win.
We'll set up a system that plays to the players' strengths, while understanding that teams that serve tough and control the ball are usually the ones that win. Off the court, we want our players to embrace the fact that they are leaders, and on the court, hopefully we are inspiring others with how we compete together.
Anything else to add?
I want to thank Barry Alvarez and Terry Gawlik for this incredible opportunity. The University of Wisconsin is a unique and special place. To follow in the footsteps of Steve Lowe, John Cook, and Pete Waite, coaches who have done so much for this program over time, is a dream come true. I am excited to get to know the players and to start working with them. There's a lot of work in front of all of us, to get to the level that everyone feels is possible, and I couldn't be more fired up to get started.
