MADISON, Wis. - Three members of the University of Wisconsin volleyball team were honored by the Big Ten Conference as part of the year-end awards. Junior Alexis Mitchell was named honorable mention All-Big Ten for the second straight year while Ellen Chapman and Courtney Thomas were named to the All-Freshman team. In addition, freshman Caroline Workman was selected as the Badgers recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship award.

"It good to see a number of our players being recognized for their efforts by the Big Ten coaches," said UW head coach Pete Waite.

"Alexis had her best season yet and was a force in the middle for us.  She has really worked hard since last season to improve her net play and that was evident in her attacking and blocking numbers."

Mitchell, a 6-0 middle blocker, earns her second straight honorable mention All-Big Ten honor. She led the Badgers with a .306 hitting percentage and 1.00 blocks per set. The Davenport, Iowa, native ranked 10th in the Big Ten in hitting percentage and tied for 10th in blocks per set.  She ranked third on the team with 2.26 kills per set, leading the team in kills in six matches.  Mitchell was also the UW's top blocker in 18 matches. She tied her career-best of nine blocks at N.C. State on Sept. 2.

Chapman, a 6-5 outside hitter, and Thomas, a 6-0 setter/hitter, become the 12th and 13th Badgers to be recognized on the Big Ten All-Freshman team since the award began in 1999. It is also only the second time in award history that UW has landed two players on the team. Current seniors Janelle Gabrielsen and Elle Ohlander were both named to the 2008 freshman team.
"As freshmen, Ellen and Courtney were major contributors on our team," says Waite. "Ellen improved dramatically over the course of the season and carried a big load for us at the net.  I was impressed with her composure and shot selection the entire year."

Chapman, from Glenview, Ill., led the Badgers with 2.83 kills per set, leading the team in kills in 17 matches, including the last 15 of the season. Chapman recorded a career-high 21 kills vs. Michigan on Nov. 11 and a career-best 14 digs vs. Penn State on Nov. 6. She recorded four double-doubles this season, ranking fourth on the team with 1.51 digs per set.

"Courtney was a great compliment to Nellie in the setter/hitter role," says Waite. "With those two setting we were able to stay in a fast offensive transition.  Courtney impressed a lot of people with her strong attack and all-around game."

Thomas led the Badgers with 16 double-doubles this season and also added two triple doubles. She averaged 5.63 assists, 1.96 kills, 2.58 digs and 0.66 blocks per set.  The DeKalb, Ill., native was named the MVP of the Rhode Island Invitational and also earned all-tournament honors at the InnTowner Invitational.

Workman, a 5-5 defensive specialist from Los Angeles, played in 27 matches, starting seven. She played a key defensive role for the Badgers late in the season. Workman averaged 1.47 digs per set, tallying double-figure saves in four matches, including a career-high 14 digs vs. Penn State on Nov. 6.

"I'm also glad that Caroline was recognized as a Sportsmanship honoree," says Waite. "She brings a great positive energy to our team every day and she backs it up with strong, consistent play on the court."
