MADISON, Wis. – Kelli Bates, a 5-11 outside hitter from Bradley, Ill., has signed a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball at the University of Wisconsin, head coach Kelly Sheffield announced today.
“Kelli is a tough competitor who is passionate about the game of volleyball,” Sheffield said. “Even though she’s just under six feet, she’s jump touching 10 feet and puts up a solid block. She gets off the floor quickly and has a lot of range with her attack. We think she’s one of the best six-rotation players in her class.”
Bates is ranked No. 63 on PrepVolleyball.com’s list of Senior Aces. She is a 2013 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) honorable mention All-American and was named an AVCA Player of the Week as a freshman. Bates was named the Kankakee Daily Journal Player of the Year in 2012 for Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School and head coach Kary Dowling.
Bates wrapped up her high school career as the school record holder for career kills with 1,160 and career digs with 962. As a senior, she averaged 4.02 kills, 3.66 digs, 0.56 aces and 0.58 blocks per set while hitting .426. Bates is a three-time Southwest Suburban all-conference selection and a four-time all-area pick. She is also a four-time most valuable player for the Boilermakers.
“Kelli comes from a great family and has a tremendous work ethic on the court and in the classroom,” said Sheffield. “Her back court skills are really good for her age – she is a really good passer and has good range defensively. She’s a confident winner and absolutely loves being in the gym.”
Bates also plays with the Chicago Ultimate Volleyball Club under coach Marco Quintana and club director Erin Lorenz. She earned All-America honors in 2011, leading her team to a third-place finish at the USA Volleyball Junior National Championships. In 2012, her team finished ninth at the AAU National Championships and 13th in the USA Volleyball Championships.
Bates is the second member of her family to play college volleyball has her sister Kara was a 2012 All-Mid-American Conference pick at Ball State.
