MADISON, Wis. – Senior middle blocker Mary Ording was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after averaging 1.44 blocks per set at the InnTowner Invitational, the conference office announced today.
Ording turned in 13 blocks in three matches this past weekend, including six against Drake and four against North Dakota State. Ording leads the team with 41 blocks this season, averaging 1.37 per set. Her career-high block total is eight, which came against James Madison Aug. 31.
Ording’s 1.37 blocks per set are third best in the Big Ten. As a team, the Badgers are tops in the conference averaging 2.98 blocks per set.
The 6-3 native of Carmel, Ind., has started all nine matches for the Badgers this season, playing in all 30 sets. On top of her blocking, Ording also contributed five kills this weekend.
This is Ording’s first Big Ten weekly honor in her career at Wisconsin and the Badger’s first weekly honor since Julie Mikaelsen was named freshman of the week Nov. 1, 2010. The last Badger defensive player of the week was Brittney Dolgner in Oct. 2009.
