MADISON, Wis. – Head coach Kelly Sheffield has announced that seniors Annemarie Hickey and Julie Mikaelsen as well as junior Kt Kvas will serve as team captains for the Wisconsin volleyball team during the 2013 season. The trio was selected by a team vote.

"We are a program that works hard at developing leadership skills with all of the players,” said Sheffield. “With that said, in the spring the team decided to have Annemarie, Jules, and Kt be our team captains.

“Anne brings competitive fire, work ethic, and backbone to the table. Jules brings maturity and experience along with a contagious love of the game, and Kt brings unbridled enthusiasm and helps corral her teammates toward a collective goal. All three work really well together and have earned the respect of their teammates."

Hickey, a 5-8 libero/outside hitter, has led the Big Ten Conference in digs per set the last two seasons. She averaged 4.93 digs per set as a junior and 4.77 digs per set as a sophomore. A native of Oswego, Ill., Hickey became the 12th player in UW history to record 1,000 digs in a career and owns a three-year total to 1,367 digs. She ranks fifth on the Badgers’ career record list for total digs and second with 4.00 digs per set. This past summer, Hickey was a member of the USA Volleyball A2 program for returning college athletes, earning a silver medal.

Mikaelsen, a 6-3 right-side hitter, played in all 33 matches as a junior, starting 22. She ranked third on the team with 2.63 kills per set, tying a career high with 19 kills against Illinois. The Askim, Norway, native averaged 0.59 blocks per set last season, setting a career best with eight blocks against the Illini. She also had a career-best 15 digs vs. Indiana and averaged 1.18 digs per set.

Kvas, a 5-7 setter/defensive specialist, played in five matches as a sophomore. The Eagan, Minn., native put up a career-best 32 assists against Savannah State last season. She also had a career best five digs and added one kill against the Tigers.

The Badgers host their annual Family Fun Day and Cardinal vs. White Scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 24. Doors to the Field House open at 2 p.m. for Family Fun Day where children of all ages can play volleyball on the court with the team or participate in a number of off-court activities. The intrasquad scrimmage begins at 3:30 p.m. Admission to both events is free.
