MADISON, Wis. – For the first time since the 2011 season, the University of Wisconsin volleyball team receives votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll. The Badgers receive 17 points (37th) in the preseason poll released today.

“To tell you the truth, getting votes in the preseason poll isn’t something I get too excited about since about 50 teams get votes," said first-year head coach Kelly Sheffield.

"But what does get me fired up is what happens in the gym. So far, I’ve liked what I’ve seen from the players.  They came in the gym ready to learn and compete and I loved the energy we came in with.  I told them after practice on the first day that we are looking for consistency over time. That’s what’s going to get people playing time and what it’s going to take for us to keep climbing as a program.  But as for the things you look for from your team on the first day, it was a good day.”

Reigning NCAA champion Texas (29-4 in 2012) leads the poll and picks up 55 first-place votes. Defending Big Ten Conference champion Penn State (33-3) earns 30 first-place votes to rank second. Stanford (30-4), Southern California (30-6) and Washington (25-7) round out the top-five teams, respectively.

In addition to the Nittany Lions, six other Big Ten teams are ranked in the top 25, the most for any conference in the country. Minnesota (27-8) comes in at No. 6 while Michigan (27-12), which advanced to its first NCAA semifinal last season, enters the year ranked seventh. Nebraska (26-7) ranks 10th while Michigan State (25-10) is seeded 14th. No. 16 Purdue (23-11) and No. 23 Ohio State (23-11) complete the ranked conference teams. Illinois (14-16) receives 49 points in the poll.

The Badgers will also face No. 19 Louisville (30-4) at the North Dakota State Invitational and No. 20 Kansas (26-7) at home in the InnTowner Invitational. Two other non-conference opponents receive votes as Pepperdine (20-12), host of the Pepperdine Invitational, earns 65 points and Northern Iowa (25-10), another opponent at North Dakota State, picked up three points.

Wisconsin opens its season on Aug. 30-31 at the Pepperdine Invitational in Malibu, Calif. The Badgers home season kicks off on Sept. 13-14 with the 22nd-annual InnTowner Invitational.
