Badger volleyball adds two transfers

Juley and Kriskova

May 19, 2014

MADISON, Wis. – Romana Kriskova, a 6-3 outside/right side hitter, and Erin Juley, a 5-10 setter, have transferred to play volleyball at the University of Wisconsin, head coach Kelly Sheffield announced Monday. Kriskova played two seasons at Virginia Commonwealth while Juley played two years at Long Beach State.

Both players, who have two years of eligibility remaining, will join the Badgers this summer and will be able to train with the team and strength coaches before UW opens the 2014 season in August. Both players will be immediately eligible to play.

“I’m really excited to add Romana to the roster for this year,” Sheffield said. “I’ve coached against her the past two years and have always thought that she was a heck of a player. She hits hard, with a lot of range, and can hit from both pins.

“Her freshman year she played on the right and last year she played on the left. She’s a six-rotation player who passes well and has a nice jump serve – and this kid competes. She carried a big load at VCU last year and it’s not often you are able to get a player who averaged almost five kills and six points per set.”

A native of Bratislava, Slovakia, Kriskova earned American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) honorable mention All-America honors in 2013. She was named to the 2013 AVCA All-East Region team and was the 2013 Atlantic-10 Conference Player of the Year.

Kriskova averaged 4.83 kills per set as a sophomore, which ranked fifth nationally, tallying 20-plus kills in 12 matches. She hit .269 (623 kills – 253 errors – 1,377 attempts) and also led the A-10 with 50 service aces (0.39/set). Kriskova played all the way around for the Rams, ranking second on the team with 2.37 digs per set while adding 0.60 blocks per set.

As a freshman, she averaged 2.39 kills per set while leading the team with 28 aces.

A member of the Slovakian Junior and Senior National Teams, she led her club team to the Slovakian Championship match in 2011.

"I'm very fired up to bring Erin in this fall,” Sheffield said. “She is extremely talented and has played in a lot of high level matches and has done a lot of winning.  Erin is competitive and very skilled. She grew up watching Badger athletics and the volleyball program and has a love for this program that goes back a long ways. Our gym is going to be a lot better with Erin Juley in it."

Juley was the starting setter for the 49ers as a freshman and redshirt sophomore. She took over starting setter duties as a true freshman three matches into the season. A 2011 Big West Conference All-Freshman team honoree, Juley ranked third in the league with 10.61 assists per set.  The La Grange, Ill., native also added 1.69 digs and 0.58 blocks per set her rookie season.

After redshirting the 2012 season due to injury, Juley started all 29 matches for LBSU last fall. She again ranked third in the Big West in assists, averaging 10.43 per set. Juley ranked fourth on the 49ers team with 2.03 digs and 0.11 service aces per set.  She recorded nine double-doubles on the season with double-figure digs in nine matches, including a career best 19 saves vs. Cal State Northridge.

Juley played at Lyons High School, leading the Lions to the 2010 Illinois state championship as a senior.
