MADISON, Wis. - For Alexis Mitchell, today’s graduation ceremony will bittersweet.

“After I walk off the stage Saturday, I will just feel relieved -- no more school! -- but most of all I will feel accomplished,” said Mitchell. “I came here four years ago to get my education and compete at a high level and I have accomplished both of my goals.”

Mitchell, a two-sport standout in volleyball and track, will graduate today with a degree in consumer affairs. She will receive her degree from the School of Human Ecology and walk in ceremonies at the Kohl Center at 10 a.m.

The four-year letterwinner in volleyball was a two-time honorable mention All-Big Ten pick at middle blocker. The Davenport, Iowa, native turned her talents to the track after her court career. She competed in the long jump, finishing eighth in that event at the 2013 Big Ten Indoor Championships.

“It is hard to narrow it down to one thing that I will remember the most about my athletic career but I had an amazing experience this year competing in my last season of volleyball and my first season of track,” explains Mitchell. “I was able to get to know two great groups of athletes and learn more from great coaches. It was definitely a unique experience that I am so grateful that I was able to have.”

Mitchell plans on interning in a student-athlete development office for the next year while applying to graduate school. She intends on obtaining her master’s degree in sport management or sport administration.

“The experience of being a student-athlete has taught me a lot about hard work and teamwork,” said Mitchell. “I’ve had the opportunity to meet so many different people and I truly feel that they have all helped me learn more about myself as a person. Learning how to be a great teammate is an essential part of being an athlete and my experiences will allow me to work well with others in any career path I choose.”

In the meantime, Mitchell is going to enjoy her big day today.

“My immediate family will see me graduate -- my mom, sister, niece and nephew,” says Mitchell. “My best friend from home will be here as will my fiancé and his family. After graduation, I'm planning on celebrating with my family and also with friends. I just want to enjoy my last few nights in Madison.”

Congratulations Alexis on a great career and good luck in the future!
