USA Volleyball Release
MADISON, Wis. – Three members of the University of Wisconsin volleyball program have been selected to the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Senior A2 Program. Ellen Chapman, Annemarie Hickey and Courtney Thomas were named to the 48-player roster that will train and compete in Dallas this summer.
“This is a great opportunity for Ellen, Courtney, and Annemarie,” said UW head coach Kelly Sheffield. “They’ll get the opportunity to train with some of the other great players in the college game for a week and then compete against each other in front of all of the great high school players at USA Junior Nationals. “
The U.S. Women's National Volleyball Senior A2 program, which is open to athletes with collegiate eligibility remaining, will take place in Dallas from June 25 to July 4 in conjunction with the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships. The athletes were selected from the 240 participants at the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team Open Tryouts held Feb. 22-24 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
“All three players had great tryouts and anytime you get the opportunity to test your game against other great players, it’s awesome and can only help them,” said Sheffield. “And, without question, anytime you get the opportunity to wear a USA jersey, man, does it get any better than that?”
Chapman, a 6-4 outside hitter, led the Badgers in kills last season, averaging 2.86 per set. Hickey, a 5-8 libero, led the Big Ten Conference with 4.93 digs per set in 2012, while Thomas, a 6-0 setter, ran the UW offense, putting up 10.55 assists per set last fall.
The A2 roster has athlete representation from 29 different universities with 12 schools having multiple selections. Purdue had four players selected for the program, while UCLA, Iowa State, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Louisville and Loyola Marymount have three athletes each in the program. A total of 12 Big Ten players were selected to the team.
During the six-day training period June 25-30, the 48 athletes will be divided into four equal teams that will compete in pool play against the other A2 program teams and the top-four Premier Volleyball League (PVL) teams. After pool play, the four A2 program teams and PVL teams will split into their own divisions to determine the medalist teams in the competition.
