2013 Printable Spring Schedule

MADISON, Wis. – First-year head coach Kelly Sheffield has announced that the Wisconsin volleyball team will play three home matches during the 2013 spring season. The Badgers will host Loyola, Green Bay and Milwaukee in matches at the UW Field House. Wisconsin will also play a spring tournament at Minnesota.

“I’m excited to announce our spring schedule,” said Sheffield, who was hired as the UW head coach at the end of December. “One of the priorities was to give our fans a few opportunities to see the team play and watch the progress through the spring - that’s why we are playing three home matches.

“Because we have a few players working their way back from injuries, I wasn’t looking to play in too many tournament formats, so the single matches work great for us.  We are ending our spring with a multi-team tournament – which is perfect.”

The Badgers open the spring schedule on March 16 when they host Loyola at 6 p.m. in the UW Field House.  The Ramblers were 17-12 in 2012 and advanced to the semifinal round of the Horizon League championship.

Wisconsin hosts Green Bay on April 6 at 6 p.m. The Phoenix has a new head coach in Michaela Franklin, a former assistant at Marquette. Green Bay was 15-14 last season, losing to Loyola in the Horizon League quarterfinals.

UW will hold two special events in conjunction with the Saturday matches against Loyola and Green Bay. The participating teams will host an open practice from 2:30 - 4 p.m. in the Field House.

“One of our goals is to make sure that we are doing everything we can to connect with the fans of the program,” Sheffield explained. “The ‘wash drills’ that we do before our home Saturday matches will be open to the public, and we are also going to hold a ‘Meet the Coaches’ and a ‘Meet the Players’ session right after the matches where fans can ask questions and get insight on how things are going.”

Wisconsin wraps up its home season on April 9 by hosting Milwaukee at 7 p.m. The Panthers were 9-19 in 2012, losing several of their key players to injuries during the season.

The Badgers’ spring season concludes on April 20 with an eight-team tournament at Minnesota. UW could face 2012 NCAA tournament participants Iowa State, Northern Iowa and Minnesota in the invitational.

The Badgers began their first practices under Sheffield in mid-January.  He has 12 letterwinners on his spring roster, including middle blocker Dominique Thompson, who missed the 2012 fall season due to a foot injury.

“For the past six weeks we’ve been practicing in small groups in the gym a couple of times per week, and five days a week we’ve been with our strength coach doing strength, agility, jumping, and speed training,” said Sheffield.  “The players are working hard and getting a better idea all the time with what we are looking for and I’m getting a better idea of what each of them are capable of.  We begin team practices on Monday and I couldn’t be more excited to get into that phase.”
