MADISON, Wis. – The 2013 NCAA runner up Wisconsin volleyball team will play four times this spring, head coach Kelly Sheffield announced today. The Badgers, who ended the fall season ranked second in the national polls, will host Minnesota and Marquette in the UW Field House while traveling to Marquette for an open practice as well as competing in a tournament at Minnesota.
“We are excited to be able to play two home matches in the Field House this spring,” Sheffield said. “Our away matches are also close enough so that any of our passionate fans will be able to travel the matches easily. We are playing good teams that return a lot of talent.”
Wisconsin opens the spring season with a home match against Big Ten Conference foe Minnesota April 6. The Golden Gophers advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16, losing to Stanford. Minnesota went 29-7 overall and finished third in the league standings.
The Badgers will compete in an open practice at Marquette on Wednesday, April 2 before the Golden Eagles come to Madison for a match on Wednesday, April 16. Marquette advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2013, losing to Illinois 3-1. The Golden Eagles were 26-6 overall and won the Big East Conference title at 15-1. Marquette opens its first season under new head coach Ryan Theis.
The schedule for the Minnesota Spring Invitational on Saturday, April 26 has not been set but Wisconsin could play several of the Midwestern teams including host Minnesota, Northern Iowa, South Dakota or North Dakota State.
All home matches, played in the UW Field House, are open to the general public and are free.
