MADISON, Wis. – Three members of the University of Wisconsin volleyball team will participate in open tryouts for the U.S. Women’s National Team and Associated Training Programs this weekend at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Junior-to-be Janelle Gabrielsen as well as sophomores-to-be Alexis Mitchell and Mary Ording will compete for spots on the U.S. Women’s Volleyball National Team program and the U.S. Women’s Senior A2 teams.
Hugh McCutcheon, the U.S. Women’s National Team Head Coach, will lead the evaluation process for the tryout.
The 6-1 Gabrielsen started all 29 matches for the Badgers at setter in 2009. She averaged 9.63 assists per set and also added 2.43 digs, 0.89 kills, 0.46 blocks and 0.15 service aces per set. Gabrielsen was named to the 2009 InnTowner Invitational All-Tournament team and also to the 2008 Big Ten All-Freshman team.
Mitchell, a 6-1 middle blocker, was named to the 2009 Big Ten All-Freshman team. She started 23 matches as a true freshman, averaging 1.76 kills per set and leading the Badgers with 64 blocks (0.71/set).
A 6-3 middle blocker, Ording came on strong at the end of the 2009 season, starting the last five matches. She averaged 0.85 kills and 0.65 blocks per set on the season and upped that to 1.38 kills and 1.0 blocks per set in the matches she started.
Athletes with collegiate eligibility remaining for the 2010 season and not selected to the USA Women’s National Team may be invited to participate in the USA Senior A2 Team. This program is tentatively scheduled to take place in Phoenix from May 24 through June 2. A projected 24 athletes will be invited to participate in the program, which will include training and competition in the 2010 USA Adult Open Championships in the Open Division from May 29-June 1.
