UW Field House, Madison, Wis.

Head coach Pete Wate

Opening statement:
“I’m happy that we had a good match on senior night. The seniors did well and everyone else played hard for them. We had a nice balanced attack and played a solid match. We got half way through each set and pulled away, and I thought that was a good sign.”

On the play of Courtney Thomas:
“Courtney did a good job going to the middles early, which opens it up for everybody. It’s the first time I looked at the stats, and it was a very good night for Ellen. It’s one of the best she’s had in a couple of weeks, so I know she feels good about that and everybody feels like it was a good shot in the arm for them.”

On finishing sets:
“Each one of them, I think we got stronger as we went on. That has been a big part of recent matches. We got to 18, 19 and weren’t finishing, so they did a nice job with that tonight.”

On correcting the service errors before playing Nebraska:
“We want to be aggressive, but if you’re aggressive, you’ll have more aces in there along with some service errors, but you have to have more aces. We worked on it all week and for some reason they were a little off tonight, but it will be really important on Sunday. We have to keep Nebraska out of their offense and keep them off the net.”

On pulling away late in the set:
“Part of it is rhythm and tempo, and part of it is just I think if we played a faster tempo, this team was just not able to keep up. We talked to Courtney about making their middle blockers chase us to the side and she did a better job with that as the match went on. She just was giving gaps for their outside hitters and that helped a lot with their hitting percentages.”

Senior Bailey Reshel

On the seniors starting out well:
“It’s just an example to follow. If we get going, we get everybody else going, so it’s good to have that start right away.”

Sophomore Ellen Chapman

On her leading the team with 13 kills:
“I just personally needed to start hitting more. For the past couple of weeks, I have been very timid and not aggressive and tonight, I just tried to swing more instead of tipping and rolling shots. That helps the team when I’m more aggressive.”

Senior Alexis Mitchell

On the high hitting percentages of the team:
“Everyone just started off swinging and like Pete said, Courtney went to the middles at the beginning, so it really opened up all of our hitters. We had a really balanced attack. As you can see, everyone hit probably the highest we’ve hit this season for the whole team. Everyone was really going after it and we weren’t making errors, which was a focus this week for us.”
