DURHAM, N.C. -- Struggling against Furman's tenacious defense and its own lack of cohesiveness, the Wisconsin volleyball team dropped its first match of the season on Saturday morning. The Badgers (1-1) fell to Furman 25-17, 25-21, 22-25, 25-18.

 Fast Facts
• Graff and Reshel lead UW with 10 kills apiece
• Hickey tallies career high 19 digs
• Morales comes off bench to spark team

The Paladins' defense forced Wisconsin to hit just .146 (53-29-164) for the match as only two Badgers recorded double-figure kills. Crystal Graff and Bailey Reshel led UW with 10 kills apiece. Janelle Gabrielsen, who also set for the Badgers, added nine kills.

Furman was led by Chandler Ambrester, who put away 18 kills. The Paladins hit .221 (54-20-154) as a team. Ambrester was one of two Furman players tallying 19 digs as Carolyn Nicoletti also had 19 saves.

Furman outblocked Wisconsin 10-5 and also finished with a 75-70 advantage in digs. The Badgers failed to tally a block in the fourth set. Alexis Mitchell led UW with three block assists.

The Badgers also struggled in trying to find the right combination of players. Wisconsin had four different starting lineups, a different one for each set, as 12 players saw action on the court. UW switched up setters as both Gabrielsen and Courtney Thomas ran the offense. Gabrielsen had 23 assists while Thomas had 19 helpers.

Annemarie Hickey shared match-high honors with 19 digs while three other Badgers also tallied double figures. Graff recorded her first career double-double, adding 13 digs, while Thomas also had a double-double with 11 saves. Deme Morales chipped in 10 digs and seven kills for Wisconsin.

Both teams recorded four service aces.

The first set was tied at 13 before two Wisconsin hitting errors allowed Furman to take a 16-13 lead. The Paladins upped their lead to 21-15 behind two kills from Alexis Shaffer as UW would get no closer.

Set two was also tied at 13 before Furman again pulled away, this time tallying two team blocks. Wisconsin rallied to tie the set at 21 but the Paladins would score four straight points to take the set.

Behind Gabrielsen's setting and the play of Morales, UW took the third set. The Badgers broke open the set late, scoring four straight off Furman attack errors to lead 23-19. Gabrielsen put up seven assists in the match while Morales had five kills.

Wisconsin couldn't maintain its momentum in the fourth set though as the Paladins again broke open the period midway through. Furman led 16-12 off a block and the Badgers couldn't get any closer than 19-17 as the Paladins won the match.

UW wraps up tournament play tonight, taking on 17th-ranked and undefeated Duke at 6 p.m. CT.
