DURHAM, N.C. -- Behind a dominating offensive performance, the Wisconsin volleyball team opened the 2011 season Friday with a 25-12, 25-20, 25-16 win over Charleston Southern in the first round of the Duke Invitational.

 Fast Facts
• Graff and Mitchell lead Badgers with nine kills each
• Hickey tallies career high five service aces
• 13 of 17 players see action

Led by nine kills apiece from Crystal Graff and Alexis Mitchell, the Badgers tallied 40 team kills, compared to 21 for the Lady Buccaneers. Thirteen of 17 UW players saw time on the court and eight tallied kills. Kristy Bourquin, Ellen Chapman and Mary Ording all chipped in five kills for the offense.

Wisconsin hit .391 as a team, with Chapman leading the way at .714 (5-0-7). Mitchell hit .667 (9-1-12) with freshman Courtney Thomas putting up 31 assists, running the offense.

The Badgers kept Charleston Southern out of its offense with strong serving, allowing the Lady Bucs to hit only .066,  UW recorded nine service aces behind Annemarie Hickey's career-best five scores. Hickey also shared match-high honors with eight digs as Wisconsin outdug CSU 35-27.

UW finished with a 7-6 edge in blocks behind Graff's and Bourqin's match-high four block assists.

Wisconsin jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first set as Chapman had three kills. The Lady Bucs would get no closer than five points the entire set as UW was nearly unstoppable on offense, hitting .522 with only two hitting errors.

The Badgers led 13-5 in the second set before the Lady Bucs went on a 5-0 run to cut the lead to three (13-10). Charleston Southern went on a 4-0 late in the set to cut the UW lead to 20-18 but two kills from Graff helped put the set away.

UW trailed early in the third set until two kills from Ording keyed a 9-1 run to give the Badgers a 10-3 lead. Five service aces in the set, including at match point, aided the effort.

Wisconsin continues tournament play Saturday, taking on Furman at 11 a.m. CT and 17th-ranked Duke at 6 p.m.
