MADISON, Wis. - A 3-0 record at the Minnesota Spring Invitational in Minneapolis on Saturday propelled the Wisconsin volleyball team to a perfect spring record. The Badgers wrapped up the season with an undefeated 5-0 mark.
Wisconsin swept Minnesota-Crookston 25-10, 25-17; Minnesota 25-20, 25-15; and South Dakota 25-10, 25-10 at the Sports Pavilion on the University of Minnesota campus.
Junior Ellen Chapman led the Badgers over Minnesota-Crookston with nine kills while hitting .438. Juniors Dominique Thompson and Deme Morales both added eight kills against the Golden Eagles. Wisconsin recorded four service aces against UMC with two coming from junior Courtney Thomas. Freshman Lauren Carlini led the team with eight digs while Kt Kvas added five saves.
The Badgers jumped out to a 15-7 lead in the first set against the Golden Gophers and went on to the sweep. Thomas led the Badgers with seven kills while Chapman added six putaways and served three straight aces in the second set. Sophomore Taylor Morey keyed the defense with eight digs while Carlini had a team-best two blocks.
Wisconsin used a balanced attack to down South Dakota in the final match as three players - Taylor Fricano, Thompson and Chapman - each had six kills. Thompson was a perfect 5-for-5 on offense in the first set and added a team-best three blocks in the match. Morey again led the back row with eight digs.
The Badgers will practice for two more weeks this spring and will announce their 2014 fall schedule on Wednesday.
