MADISON, Wis. -- In their final spring season matches, the Badgers won two contests while dropping one Saturday at the Minnesota Spring Invitational in Minneapolis, defeating Minnesota-Crookston and Ohio before falling to Minnesota.
Wisconsin completes its spring season with a 5-1 record.
The Badgers played dominant volleyball in the first match, defeating Minnesota-Crookston 25-16, 25-8. Sophomore Deme Morales led all players with 12 kills. Junior Annemarie Hickey played all the way around, adding eight kills. Junior Lindsey Seil started at libero and led the Badgers with 10 digs and two aces.
Wisconsin followed that performance with a narrow 25-22 first-set victory over Ohio before finishing off the Bobcats with a 25-15 second-set win and the 2-0 match victory. Junior Julie Mikaelsen led the team with 14 blocks while Hickey added 15 digs.
Minnesota awaited the Badgers in the final match of the afternoon. The two teams played to a pair of nail-biter sets, but the Gophers prevailed in both 25-21 and 26-24. Sophomore Crystal Graff led the team with nine kills in the match while sophomore Ellen Chapman and Mikaelsen each contributed six. Chapman also served three aces in the match while Hickey was again the dig leader with eight.
Mikaelsen finished the day with 20 kills, while Graff and Chapman each contributed 16. Morales (14) and Courtney Thomas (10) also completed the day in double-digit kills.
Hickey wrapped up the tournament with 23 digs while Wisconsin had 14 blocks as a team.
The Badgers now spend the summer conditioning and refining their skills before opening up competition again in August.
