MADISON, Wis. --The Wisconsin track and field teams will host four meets in Madison for the 2014 season as part of the schedule announced Tuesday by Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Mick Byrne.
UW will host three meets during the indoor season, including the team's first two competitions of the year. The Badger Track Classic opens things for the Badgers on Jan. 18, with the annual Wisconsin Elite Invitational following a week later, Jan. 24-25.
In addition to their three home events, the Badgers will take part in two of the nation's top indoor meets when they head to New York for the New Balance Invitational, Feb. 7-8, and to Fayetteville, Ark., for the always-fast Tyson Invitational a week later, Feb. 14-15.
The Red & White Open is set for Feb. 21 and serves as UW's final tune-up as they try to defend last year's conference title at the 2014 Big Ten Indoor Championships the following weekend. The Big Ten meet will once again be hosted at a neutral site at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio, after last year's inaugural success.
Two weeks later, the Badgers will travel west for the 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships, set for March 14-15 in Albuquerque, N.M., hoping to build off last season's third-place podium finish.
"It is a little different from what we have done in the past," Byrne said. "Our schedule will give our kids a chance to compete across the country. We feel it is important to get exposure on the east coast, hence why we are going to the New Balance Invitational. We are also going back to Arkansas, normally we go there with a handful of athletes, but this year we are going with a full group."
After finishing third at the Big Ten outdoor meet a year ago, UW will open the outdoor season with two meets in Florida, including the UCF Invitational on March 22nd, and the highly-competitive Florida Relays, April 4-5. In addition, the Badgers will compete at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays, April 17-19, the 105th running of the Drake Relays, April 24-26 and the Penn Relays, April 24-26. The Badgers will also travel to Columbia, Mo., to take part in the Missouri Invitational, May 3.
UW then hosts the annual Wisconsin Twilight Invitational on May 10 before competing in the 2014 Big Ten Outdoor Championships in West Lafayette, Ind. The three-day competition is set for May 16-18.
Championship season continues with the NCAA West Preliminary Round in Fayetteville, Ark., from May 29-31 and, finally, the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 6-11.
"We are opening it up at the UCF Invite, and we will be down in Florida training over the spring break vacation," Byrne said. "Traditionally, we go to Mt. SAC, but this year we are going with a complete team. We are also excited to go back for the Drake Relays, which is a big Midwest carnival. I think overall it is a great pre-championship schedule that our athletes are excited about."
The 2014 USA Outdoor Championships, set for June 25-28 in Sacramento, Calif., rounds out the Badgers' competition schedule.
