MADISON, Wis. - A quartet of Wisconsin track athletes will compete on the big stage this month as Wisconsin's Deanna Latham and Zach Ziemek will represent the United States at the Panamerican Combined Events Cup and the Thorpe Cup, respectively, while Georgia Ellenwood and Morgan McDonald will compete at the 2014 International Association of Athletics Federations World Junior Championships
Latham, who finished 11th at the U.S. Outdoor Championships in the heptathlon, will travel to Ottawa, Ontario, for the Panamerican Combined Events Cup on July 17-18. The Newbury, Massachusetts, native has a personal-best heptathlon score of 5,745 points which she set this year at the Bulldog Heptathlon in Athens, Georgia. The 2014 Big Ten pentathlon champion also earned first-team All-America honors in the event this year with a personal-best score of 4,253 points at the NCAA indoor meet.
Ziemek will don the red, white and blue at the Thorpe Cup, an international competition between the U.S. and Germany, in Marburg, Germany, July 26-27. The UW junior is coming off of a fourth-place showing in the decathlon at the U.S. Outdoor Championships and a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, where he tallied a personal-best score of 7,981 points. A two-time Big Ten champion in the decathlon, Ziemek also earned All-America honors in the heptathlon earlier this year.
Ellenwood, a UW freshman, will compete for Canada in the heptathlon at the IAAF World Junior Championships in Eugene, Oregon, July 22-27 at Hayward Field. The Langley, British Columbia, native is coming off of a 12th-place showing in the heptathlon at the NCAA outdoor championships last month. Ellenwood took home bronze at the 2013 Pan American Junior Championships with a personal-best score of 5,493 points.
McDonald, an incoming Wisconsin freshman, will run the 5000 meters for Australia at the IAAF World Junior Championships. He is coming off of a seventh-place showing in the mile in Thursday's Harry Jerome Invitational with a time of 4 minutes, 4.01 seconds.
