SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Fresh off breaking the Wisconsin school record on the shot put on Wednesday, junior Kelsey Card smashed the program record in the discus on Sunday en route to a sixth-place finish at the 2014 USA Outdoor Championships at Hornet Stadium.
On her final throw of the competition, Card unleashed a heave of 191 feet, 7 inches to finish second among collegiate competitors. Gia Lewis-Smallwood won the competition with a mark of 216-5.
Card advanced to the finals thanks to a toss of 188-0 on her final throw of the qualifying round, which shattered Taylor Smith's previous school record of 182-0.
It marks Card's second top-six finish of the week, as she also finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 58-3 3/4.
The competition in Sacramento was Card's first of the outdoor season for Wisconsin. She redshirted both the indoor and outdoor campaigns for UW.
With her finishes, Card earned a spot on the U.S. national team in both the shot put and the discus for the 2014 North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) U23 Championships, which are set for Aug. 8-10 in Kamloops, British Columbia.
