MADISON, Wis. -- Senior Jenny Soceka made the most of her last chance to compete before the 2010 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships get underway next week with an outstanding performance Thursday in Madison.
Soceka set a Big Ten Conference record and smashed her own Wisconsin school mark in the pole vault by clearing 14 feet, 3 1/2 inches (4.36m), solidifying her spot in the field for the USA championships in the process.
Though the collegiate season has concluded, Soceka was among a host of Badgers taking the opportunity to compete at the McClimon Complex as part of the Wisconsin Track Club’s Summer Series meet.
Soceka’s vault carried her well past her previous lifetime-best and school-record mark of 13-11 1/4 (4.25m). She actually surpassed that mark at the previous height in her progression Thursday by clearing 13-11 3/4 (4.26m). From there, it was up and over 14-3 1/2 before narrowly missing her three attempts at 14-7 1/2 (4.46m).
The performance ties Soceka for the 11th-best mark in the U.S. this year, although she is one of just four American competitors to go that high since the outdoor season began.
Her clearance also surpassed the year-old Big Ten outdoor record of 14-3 1/4 (4.35m) set by Minnesota’s Alicia Rue at the 2009 Big Ten Outdoor Championships.
An All-American after finishing eighth at the NCAA outdoor championships last weekend, Soceka will return to the U.S. meet looking to improve upon her finish at the 2009 USA Outdoor Championships. She tied for ninth in the vault last year.
Soceka will compete on the final day of the USA championships, Sunday, June 27, with the pole vault taking place at noon, during ESPN’s live broadcast window.
The 2010 USA Outdoor Championships run June 24-27 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, running concurrently with the 2010 USA Junior Outdoor Championships, which are set for June 23-26.
