Ellenwood and Hanson to compete at NCAA championships

EUGENE, Ore.-- Wisconsin freshman Georgia Ellenwood and sophomore Molly Hanson will make their national meet debuts this week at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Championships, hosted by Oregon at Hayward Field.

The four-day meet, which runs from Wednesday through Saturday, features the nation’s top 24 competitors in each of 21 events.

Ellenwood will compete in the heptathlon, as the freshman enters the week as the No. 22 seed with a season-best score of 5,400 points, set at Georgia’s Bulldog Heptathlon in April.

After redshirting the indoor season, Ellenwood has enjoyed a spectacular Wisconsin debut during the outdoor season, including a fourth-place finish in the heptathlon at the Big Ten championships with a score of 5,387 points. Ellenwood set a personal best in the shot put and won the 800 meters to cap off her second-ever collegiate heptathlon.

The Langley, British Columbia, native has a personal-best score of 5,493 set at the 2013 Pan American Junior Championships, where she earned the bronze medal. The UW freshman will represent Canada once again in a few weeks at the 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships, which will also held at Hayward Field.

The heptathlon begins on Thursday at 3 p.m. (CT) with the 100 hurdles, while action resumes Friday at 2:30 p.m. with the long jump.

Hanson also opens competition on Thursday, with the sophomore set to run in the first heat of the 1500 meters at 7:05 p.m. Hanson has enjoyed a successful first season in Madison, as she finished third in the mile at the Big Ten indoor meet and third in the 1500 at the Big Ten outdoor championships with a personal-best time of 4 minutes, 15.55 seconds. That time not only ranks 10th in program history, but also stands 12th in the nation this season.

The Dodgeville, Wisconsin, native finished second in her heat at the NCAA West Preliminary Round behind Arizona State’s Shelby Houilhan, who also owns the top seed time for Hanson’s heat at the NCAA championships of 4:13.56.

The top five competitors from each of the two heats, along with the next two fastest times overall, advance to the final of the 1500 meters, which takes place on Saturday at 4:29 p.m.
