NCAA West Preliminary Round Declared Entries

MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women’s track and field team will begin the road to the NCAA championships next week with 10 athletes.

UW has qualified 10 competitors -- combining for 14 total entries -- in nine different events to the 2013 NCAA West Preliminary Round in Austin, Texas, next Thursday-Saturday, May 23-25.

The competition in Austin serves as the opening round of the NCAA outdoor championships for programs in the West Region and is one of two preliminary-round meets. Schools in the East Region will send their athletes to compete in Greensboro, N.C.

In addition to the Badgers’ preliminary-round qualifiers, senior Dorcas Akinniyi and junior Deanna Latham have qualified directly to the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the heptathlon. Latham is seeded 10th with her score of 5,493 points -- the best by a Big Ten athlete this year -- while the 5,411 points Akinniyi scored to win the Big Ten title last week has her seeded 16th. The heptathlon is the only women’s event to not be contested at the preliminary round sites.

In all other events, competitors will work to be among the top 12 athletes (or six relay teams) from each preliminary-round site that advance to the NCAA finals in Eugene, Ore., June 5-8.

Latham is also one of three Badgers to boast top-12 seeds for the preliminary round, as her lifetime-best run of 13.15 seconds in the 100 hurdles at the Big Ten meet is good for the No. 9 seed. In the shot put, senior Taylor Smith holds the No. 6 seed at 56 feet, 11 1/2 inches. Senior Caitlin Comfort, fresh off her Big Ten title in the event, is the No. 12 seed in the 10,000 meters at 33:30.16.

The Badgers are represented in all four throws events, including three entries in the hammer throw (Smith, sophomore Angela Boushea and junior Abby Lueck) and the duo of Smith and sophomore Kelsey Card in both the shot put and discus.
