With the regular season drawing to a close, the Wisconsin Open will be the final tuneup before the 2013 Big Ten Outdoor Championships, which will be held Friday-Sunday, May 10-13, in Columbus, Ohio.

Heading into the meet, several Badgers are nationally ranked in their events.

In the shot put, senior Taylor Smith sits atop the Big Ten and ranks fifth nationally, after breaking her own Wisconsin school record with a mark of 56-11 1/2 on Saturday at the UC San Diego’s Triton Invitational.

Smith is also ranked No. 18 nationally in the discus after recording an effort of 177-5 earlier this season.

Teammate Kelsey Card ranks third in Big Ten and sits at No. 13 in the nation in the discus, after a strong showing at last weekend’s Triton Invite, where the sophomore recorded a career-best throw of 178-7.

Smith and Card will compete in the discus on Saturday and Card is also entered in the shot put.

In the heptathlon, junior Deanna Latham ranks 12th nationally in the heptathlon after tallying 5,493 points at the Mt. SAC Relays Combined Events in Azusa, Calif., on April 18.

In preparation for competing in the seven-discipline event during the championship season, Latham will compete in the 100 hurdles and long jump.

Sophomore Katelyn Malcore will compete alongside Latham in the 100 hurdles and will go head to head with sophomore Grace Heglund-Lohman in the 400 hurdles.

Freshman Anne Gregory, sophomore Victoria Paulson and junior Kristin Yarrows will compete in the 1500 meters and freshman Dana Steffen will represent Wisconsin in the 3000 steeplechase.

Also competing for Wisconsin is junior Abbie Weigel and sophomores Sophie Roth and Elizabeth Duxbury in the 400 meters, while juniors Elizabeth Wendt and Elizabeth Sequin will run the 800 meters.

Several Badgers are also set to run the 3000 meters, including senior Kiah Ehrke and sophomore Rebecca Stoebe.

Off the track, sophomore Angela Boushea, junior Abby Lueck and Smith will compete in the hammer throw, while sophomores Shanna Sticka, Emmon Rogers and redshirt freshman Brianna Bower are entered in the javelin throw.

Additionally, a number of Badgers will also compete in the pole vault, high jump and triple jump.
