MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women's track and field team begins a busy week of competition, with members of the team heading west to compete in the elite Mt.SAC Relays/ California Invitational Combined Events in Azusa, Calif. on Wednesday and Thursday, while other Badgers will travel to Iowa's Musco Twilight Invitational on Saturday.
On Wednesday, UW will send its heptathletes to compete in the Mt. SAC Relays/California Invitational Combined Events in Azusa, Calif. Azusa Pacific will host the events concurrently in the university's Cougar Athletic Stadium, beginning at 11:30 a.m. (CT) on Wednesday and continuing at 10 a.m. on Thursday.
Senior Dorcas Akinniyi and junior Deanna Latham will make their season debut in the heptathlon at the event, but the duo are not strangers to the fierce competition that meet brings each year.
Last year, both Akinniyi and Latham scored top-10 finishes in the heptathlon, with Akinniyi earning a third-place finish in the seven-discipline event with 5,572 points, while Latham scored 5,451 points to take sixth.
For the first time in her career, redshirt freshman Yolanda Hayes-Barnes will also compete in the Mt. SAC/California Invitational multi-events competition.
In addition, a number of athletes will take part in Iowa's Musco Twilight Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa, on Saturday. The meet begins with field events at 1 p.m., followed by races on the track which will start at 6 p.m.
Senior Taylor Smith, junior Abby Lueck and sophomore Kelsey Card will compete in the shot put. Both Card and Smith will also represent the Badgers in the discus.
Also competing for Wisconsin in the throws will be sophomore Angela Boushea, Lueck and Smith in the hammer throw, while sophomore Emmon Rogers, freshman Shanna Sticka and redshirt freshman Brianna Bower will take part in the javelin.
Sophomores Jessica Vardas, Courtney Walden and freshman Taylor Kirby are entered in the pole vault, and the duo of redshirt freshmen Fiona Baus and Brooke Richardson will take part in the high jump.
Additionally, senior Alexis Mitchell will compete in the long jump and will compete alongside teammates freshman Kara Krugel and junior Laura McGinnis in the triple jump.
On the track, junior Sophie Roth will run the 100 meters and will be joined by senior Brittney Harper in the 200 meters.
Also racing for the Badgers are Katelyn Malcore in the 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles, juniors Abbie Weigel and Elizabeth Sequin in the 800 meters and redshirt freshman Colleen McNulty and sophomore Victoria Paulson in the 1500 meters.
Several Badgers will also compete in the 3000 meters, and Wisconsin will close out the meet with a 4x400 relay.
