EUGENE, Ore. -- The senior duo of Ashley Beutler and Taylor Smith went out on high notes Saturday at the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Despite feeling the effects of an ankle sprain she suffered in Thursday’s semifinal, Beutler ran to a time of 10 minutes, 4.98 seconds to take ninth in the 3000 steeplechase and earn second-team All-America honors.

The lone woman in Wisconsin history to break 10:05 in the steeplechase, Beutler accomplished the feat in each of her final three races for the Badgers – including her school-record run of 10:03.68 in the semifinal.

Smith, who qualified to her final NCAA meet in both the shot put and discus, closed out her career with a 10th-place finish in the shot. UW’s school record-holder, Smith posted a best mark of 53 feet, 7 3/4 inches on the day.

The top nine throwers after the initial two flights of competition advanced to a final set of three throws. Smith missed that chance by a single spot and settled for a second-team All-America bid.
