MADISON, Wis. -- On the heels of a record-breaking performance, junior Taylor Smith again landed the top showing for the Wisconsin women’s track and field team Friday at the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, Calif.

The junior launched a throw of 171 feet, 9 inches to take seventh place in the discus at the competition hosted by UC San Diego. That came just a day after she unleashed a school-record effort of 176-1 to take seventh in an invitation-only event at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in nearby Chula Vista.

Freshman Kelsey Card -- who saw Smith top what had been her school-record mark by 2 inches Thursday -- also competed in the discus Friday, taking 11th with a mark of 162-2.

Halfway across the country, senior Monika Jakutyte put up a big number of her own in the high jump at the 103rd Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa. Jakutyte cleared 5 feet, 10 inches to take sixth in the event and to match the best mark by a Big Ten Conference athlete this season.

Following the high jump was the javelin, where sophomore Deanna Latham was the Badgers’ lone competitor. Latham threw for 126 feet, 4 inches to take 16th overall.

Wisconsin also competed in two events on the track. Junior Dorcas Akinniyi opened in the 100 hurdles and took 21st place with a time of 14.57 seconds.

In the Badgers’ lone relay event of the day, freshman Sophie Roth, senior Jessica Flax, sophomore Katelyn Malcore and Latham teamed up to compete in the 4x200 meter relay. The quartet took eighth with a time of 1:40.38.

Competition continues Saturday at both the Drake Relays and Triton Invitational.

Events at Drake resume at 8 a.m. (CT), while the Triton Invitational resumes at noon. Live Results can be found on UWBadgers.com.
