-- On a big day of competition for the Wisconsin women’s track and field team, sophomore Kelsey Card led the Badgers with a big throw in the discus.

At UC San Diego’s Triton Invitational, Card competed in the Invitational section of the discus, and threw a career-best mark of 178 feet, 7 inches to take 10th against elite competitors.

After Friday’s performance, Card ranks 12th in the nation in the event and sits second on Wisconsin’s all-time performance list, just behind teammate Taylor Smith, who holds the top spot with a mark of 182-0 from last season.

Smith competed alongside Card, finishing 15th with an effort of 168-3. Smith ranks 17th nationally after recording a throw of 177-5 earlier in the season.

In the hammer throw, Abby Lueck threw for a personal-best mark of 186-10 to take 10th. The junior’s performance ranks third on UW’s all-time performance list.

Sophomore Angela Boushea took 16th, throwing a distance of 175-1.

Wisconsin also posted a strong showing on day one of Cal’s Brutus Hamilton Invitational in the open section of the competition, scoring two wins against steep competition.

Senior Ashley Beutler made her season debut in the 1500 meters and won the event by finishing with a time of 4 minutes, 28.55 seconds.

Sophomore Rachel McNally placed fourth, recording a time of 4:32.56.

The Badgers claimed another victory in the 100 hurdles, when senior Dorcas Akinniyi ran to a first-place finish with a time of 14.20.

Additionally, sophomore Theresa Selestow took third in the 5000 meters in 17:17.67 and junior Elizabeth Sequin ran to a sixth-place finish in the 800 meters behind a career-best time of 2:16.48.

Freshman Taylor Kirby placed third in the pole vault with a clearance of 12-6 1/4, while senior Alexis Mitchell finished second in the long jump with a mark of 18-7 3/4 and Akinniyi took third with a jump of 18-6 1/2.

Several members of the team also attended Benedictine University’s Twilight Invitational in Lisle, Ill., and recorded four wins for the Badgers.

Redshirt freshman Dana Steffen won the 3000-meter steeplechase with the time of 11:16.54.

Sophomore Katelyn Malcore won the 100 hurdles in 14.71 and also posted a second-place finish in the 400 hurdles, running the event in a career-best time of 1:05.51.

In the 3000 meters, redshirt freshman Anne Gregory ran the event in a career-best time of 10:09.65 to take first place. Sophomore Erin Rosewicz placed fourth with a time of 10:27.61 and junior Sarah Miller finished fifth in 10:31.31.

Off the track, sophomore Emmon Rogers claimed a win in the javelin, throwing for a mark of 117-6.

Additionally, freshman Kara Krugel took fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 35-11 1/4.

The Badgers continue competition on Saturday, when they resume competition at the Triton Invitational at noon and return to Edwards Stadium in Berkeley, Calif., for day two of the Brutus Hamilton Invitational beginning at 11:30 a.m.
