Action at pair of meets opens busy week for Badgers

 MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women's track and field team opened a busy weekend of competition with the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, and the Triton Invitational in San Diego, Calif.

At UC San Diego's Triton Invitational, senior Taylor Smith and sophomore Kelsey Card went head to head against some of the nation's best throwers in the Elite section of the discus.

Smith currently ranks 16th nationally in the discus, after recording a throw of 177 feet, 5 inches earlier this year. At the Triton Track and Field Stadium, Smith placed seventh with a mark of 170-8.

Teammate Card finished ninth, recording an effort of 167-1.

Card and Smith, along with sophomore Angela Boushea, junior Abby Lueck and freshman Brianna Bower, resume competition tomorrow at noon. Card and Smith will compete in the Invitational section of the discus and Lueck, Smith and Card are entered in the shot put.

Also competing for Wisconsin are Boushea and Lueck in the hammer throw, while Bower will take part in the javelin.

At the prestigious Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, two UW multi-event athletes competed in the heptathlon.

Jessica Flax, who has exhausted her outdoor eligibility, competed unattached and finished fifth against strong competition.

Flax finished with 5,219 points behind a big first-place performance in the shot put. Flax climbed to the top of the leaderboard with a throw of 39-11 1/2 and took second in the javelin with an effort of 145-0.

UW freshman Taylor Twedt returned to her home state, competing unattached alongside Flax in the heptathlon.

Twedt, who is redshirting this season, finished in 15th place with 4,446 points and recorded her best finish in the high jump, placing sixth with a mark of 5-4 1/4.

Additionally, Twedt placed 12th in the 100 hurdles (15.55 seconds), 11th in the shot put (32-8 1/2), 16th in the 200 meters (27.99), 14th in the long jump (16-8 3/4), ninth in the javelin (118-6) and 15th in the 800 meters (2:40.61).

In addition to the Triton Invitational, a number of Badgers will compete at Cal's Brutus Hamilton Invitational in Berkeley, Calif., and the Benedictine Twilight Invitational in Lisle, Ill., on Friday.

The Brutus Hamilton Open and Distance Carnival begins at 10:30 a.m., while action at Benedictine starts at 3 p.m.
