Apr. 19, 2014

MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women’s track and field team excelled in the middle distance events Saturday at the Beach Invitational at Cerritos College in Norwalk, Calif., to cap off its weekend out west.

Senior Lizzie Wendt just narrowly missed out on topping her best mark in the 800 meters at the Bryan Clay Invitational yesterday but found the extra strength to break it Saturday. She placed eighth in the invite section with a time of 2:09.17 seconds, which is 0.64 seconds ahead of her previous best.

Erin Krause found similar success in the open section of the 800 meters, as the Plymouth, Minn., native finished 18th out of 140 runners with a new personal best of 2:11.52.

Freshman Georgia Ellenwood turned in a pair of strong performances one day after placing 14th in the 100 hurdles at the Bryan Clay Invite Friday. She posted her second-fastest time in the 100 hurdles this season by finishing in 14.55 seconds. Her time was good for 12th out of 61 competitors.

Ellenwood was also nearly at her best in the high jump, as she finished tied for fifth by posting her best mark of the outdoor season after clearing 5 feet, 7 inches. Her best mark in her collegiate career is 5-7 3/4, which took place this past indoor season while competing unattached.

Taylor Twedt competed in the same events as Ellenwood and finished 27th in the 100 hurdles in 15.18 and tied for eighth in the high jump by clearing 5-5, which is just one inch off of her PR.

Brooke Richardson also participated in the high jump and finished tied for 17th. Her mark of 5-3 Saturday was just 1/4 of an inch off of her PR.

Sophie Roth capped off a busy weekend with solid times in the sprints. Competing in the 400 meter invite section, the Accord, N.Y., native finished eighth with a time of 57.72. She also finished 13th out of 86 runners in the 200 meters with a time of 24.76.

In the triple jump, senior Laura McGinnis soared 39-5 3/4, which was good for seventh place.

The Badgers will split their squad again next weekend, April 24-26, as UW will travel to Des Moines, Iowa for the 105th running of the Drake Relays and to San Diego, Calif. for the Triton Invitational.
