MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin junior Kelsey Card highlighted the Badger Indoor Open at the Camp Randall Memorial Sports Center Friday by setting two facility records in each of her two events.
Competing unattached, Card recorded a toss of 56 feet, 4 inches in the shot put and then launched a throw of 185 feet, 5 inches in the exhibition discus event to kick-start her season, which will be spent as a redshirt year. Both of Card's marks would have been school records for the Badgers had she been competing in uniform.
Freshmen Georgia Ellenwood and Taylor Twedt also started their respective Badgers careers on solid footing after their performances in the 60 hurdles. The highly-touted Ellenwood competed unattached and won with a time of 9.11 seconds while Twedt, a redshirt freshman, finished second in 9.14.
The Badgers also posted a strong showing in the 3000 meters, as Wisconsin runners took the first four spots in the race. Freshman Jamie Shannon, competing unattached, won with a time of 10 minutes, 13.36 seconds. Another freshman, Grace Meurer, placed second in 10:21.61. Kelsey Hjorth (10:21.79) and Madeline Timm (10:37.09) finished third and fourth, respectively.
Freshman Sarah Disanza and junior Gabi Anzalone also contributed to the Badgers' success in the distance events by finishing 1-2 in the mile. Disanza crossed the line in 4:59.21 while Anzalone finished in 4:59.42.
The Badgers get back into action early Saturday when they host Missouri at the Camp Randall Memorial Sports Center. The dual is scheduled for a 10:30 a.m. (CT) start.
