With an eight-woman roster that contains seven sophomores and one freshman, the team is young and ready to prove themselves.
"We are excited to compete this weekend," head coach Tina Samara said. "This is a time to see what kind of competitors they are individually and see how they handle the pressure of competition. The fall is all about getting to know the players."
With the new coaching staff including Matt Manasse as assistant coach and Brian Sullivan as a volunteer assistant coach, everyone has been working from the ground up. Samara is utilizing this tournament as an educational experience, not only for the players but for the coaches as well. She herself will be on the sideline figuring out how to help them and feel out how to coach the players individually.
Samara knows the same pressure that the girls will be under. In fact, Samara has played at Minnesota previously as a student in 1992. Samara joked around that, "[She] is pretty sure it has changed a little bit since she has been there."
Results will be posted on UWBadgers.com after the conclusion of each day's matches.
Following this weekend's action, the fall schedule also includes the Spartan Invitational (9/27), the Wildcat Invite (10/4), the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional (10/10) and the Longhorn Invitational (11/8).
