MADISON, Wis. --The Wisconsin women’s tennis team welcomes back Becca Bailey as she joins the 2013-14 season.
Three years ago as a freshman in 2010, Bailey made the Badgers’ roster as a walk-on after an open tryout. Bailey chose not to compete that season, instead serving as team manager. She left the team following that season but has remained a student on campus before rejoining the team this year.
“We are excited to add Becca back to our roster. Even though she hasn’t competed for a few years, she is still a good ball striker,” said Tina Samara. “I have already seen her improve these last few days and I know every week she is going to get better.”
Before Bailey came to Wisconsin, she was ranked in Arkansas as the No. 1 in singles player for three years in a row from 2007-10. Bailey was also a four-year letterwinner and three year captain at Mount Saint Mary Academy. Her prep career included: two-time all-state honoree, overall singles state champion as a senior and runner-up as a junior, two-time singles conference champion and three-time team conference champions and team state champions as a junior and team state runner-up as a senior.
Bailey has also received the awards of being named Team MVP and received Most Distinguished Athlete Award as a senior. She also received the G16s Sportsmanship Award Winner at USTA National Zone Team Championships, the Jay Freeman Most Improved Player Award at USTA Arkansas Section in Feb. 2007, Hershel Friday Sportsmanship Award at USTA Arkansas Section in Feb. 2010. As a Tennis Europe Team Participant, Bailey played clay court tournaments in Holland, Switzerland, France, and Germany on the U.S. Team in July 2007. Bailey also competed in national hard courts and clay courts G16s and G18s Fed Cup, playing the No. 1 spot for Arkansas. Bailey was also a G18s Quarterfinalist USTA National Open in El Paso, Texas in July 2009. She was also Arkansas’ Junior Qualifying Singles Winner in every age group from 12s, 14s, 16s, and 18s.
Bailey will compete with the team for the first time next weekend, Feb. 1 at Marquette and Feb. 2 against Northern Illinois.
