MADISON, Wis. -- After the fall season, UW women’s tennis coach Tina Samara said that the Badgers hoped to use that competition as a springboard leading into the spring. For sophomore Lauren Chypyha, that fall success means a spot in the preseason ITA Midwest Regional rankings, checking in at No. 19.
“This ranking means Lauren is being recognized as one of the top 20 players in our region, which is extremely competitive,” Samara said of the Midwest Region, which boasts nationally-ranked teams Michigan (#11), Northwestern (#15), Notre Dame (#21) and Illinois (#44).
“‘Chyps’ has goals of making the All-American tournament and this is the first step,” Samara added. “On the women's side, you have to qualify and being ranked is something she can post on her resume. Now she needs to back it up on the court.”
Chypyha led the Badgers with 14 singles wins a year ago, including four wins in conference play. She followed that up by posting a 12-5 mark in the 2013 fall season. The Toronto, Ontario native captured the Draw A championship of the 2013 Spartan Invitational in September posting a perfect 4-0 weekend.
