East Lansing, Mich. – With 18 total wins and four flight championships, the Wisconsin women’s tennis team dominated the playing field at the Green and White Invitational in East Lansing over the weekend.
The Badgers recorded a 10-2 record in singles play, while going 8-1 in doubles action.
“This has been a good tournament for us,” UW head coach Brian Fleishman said. “The team as a whole has played very well and all doubles teams played with intensity and focus. The singles players have been very professional in their preparation and execution.”
In singles play, sophomores Nicky Stracar (Jericho, N.Y.) and Caroline Bauer (Winnetka, Ill.) led the Badgers with unblemished 3-0 performances en route to capturing flight championships.
Stracar was named flight A champion after defeating Michigan State’s Valentina Rusakova, 6-2, 7-5 in the finals. Before reaching the championship round, Stracar topped Courtney Wild of Ball State, 6-2, 6-0 and Eastern Michigan’s Nino Mebuke, 6-2, 6-2.
Bauer captured the flight D championship after pulling out a three-set victory over Katie Grubb of Bowling Green, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(3). In the semifinals, Bauer prevailed in a first set tiebreak before taking the second set from Eastern Michigan’s Marcela Rivero, 7-6 (6), 6-4. In the opening round, Bauer cruised past Lauren Pickrel of Ball State, 6-0, 6-0.
Senior Aleksandra Markovic (Belgrade, Serbia) reached the finals before falling to Bowling Green’s Maddy Eccleston, 6-3, 6-2. In the opening round, Markovic ousted Chloe Karoub of Detroit Mercy, 6-0, 6-0. Later, the senior defeated Michigan State’s Nicole Herzog, 6-2, 6-2.
Senior team captain Lauren Gruber (Milwaukee, Wis.) also suffered her only loss of the tournament in the championship match. Despite losing the first set in the opening round, Gruber battled back to take the next two sets from Detroit Mercy’s Amanda Cornwell, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. In the semifinals, the captain edged Emily Reuland of Bowling Green, 6-4, 6-3, before falling in the finals, 6-3, 6-1, to Eastern Michigan’s Ankita Bhatia.
Compiling an 8-1 record, Wisconsin’s three doubles teams also excelled at the invite.
The duos of Stracar and senior Alaina Trgovich (Munster, Ind.) and Markovic and senior Angela Chupa (Bradenton, Fla.) were perfect at the tournament and captured flight championships.
Gruber and Bauer paired up and suffered a loss in the semifinals and finished 2-1, while Stracar and Trgovich and Markovic and Chupa went 3-0.
The Green and White Invitational marks the conclusion of the fall season for Wisconsin. The Badgers will use this weekend’s success to prepare for the spring season, which begins Jan. 21, in Madison.
“Everybody is playing their best tennis of the fall,” Fleishman said. “This will be a good springboard for the spring season.”
