COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sophomore Nicky Stracar (Jericho, N.Y.) led the way for the Wisconsin women’s tennis team at the ITA Midwest Regional in Columbus, Ohio, reaching the third round in the main draw.
Stracar lived up to the No. 8 seed she received in the qualifying round. The sophomore defeated her first opponent Elisa Simonetti of UIC, 6-4, 6-3. She then took Illinois’s Chelcie Abajian to three sets to advance to the main draw with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 victory.
In the opening round of the main draw, Stracar defeated UIC’s Teona Tsertvadze, 6-1, 6-2. Next, the sophomore took down Kelsey Haviland of Ohio State, 6-3, 7-5, before falling in the third round to the third seed, Michigan’s Sam Critser. Critser ended Stracar’s hopes of earning a bid to the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Championships next month in Flushing N.Y., with a 7-5, 7-5 victory.
Senior Aleksandra Markovic (Belgrade, Serbia) also represented Wisconsin in Columbus. In the first round of qualifying matches, Tsertvadze defeated Markovic, 6-2, 6-4. Akron’s Angelika Jogasuria later ousted Markovic, 6-2, 7-5 in the backdraw.
Stracar paired up with senior Alaina Trgovich (Munster, Ind.) in the doubles main draw. In the opening round, Stracar and Trgovich took down IPFW’s duo of Brooke Dennis and Anita Henestrosa, 8-4, but fell to the pair of Kristy Frilling and Shannon Matthews of Notre Dame, 8-5, in the next round.
In addition to the ITA Midwest Regional, the Badgers also sent three to compete in the alternate regional hosted by Northern Illinois in Rockford, Ill., over the weekend and walked away with two flight championships.
Senior team captain Lauren Gruber (Milwaukee, Wis.) won all three of her matches to earn a flight championship. Despite dropping her first set in the opening round to Chicago State’s Karyn Emeralda, Gruber battled from behind to dig out a victory in a third-set tiebreak, 3-6, 6-1 (9). Gruber later cruised past NIU’s Arantza De La Torre, 6-0, 6-0, before capturing the flight championship in another third-set tiebreak. After coming up short in the first set, Gruber fought back to edge Michigan States’s Julianne Gruber, 5-7, 7-5 (8).
Freshman Sarah Loebel (Hamburg, Germany) also recorded a perfect 3-0 record over the weekend. In the first round, Loebel dropped just one game to Milwaukee’s Maddy Soule on her way to a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Next, Loebel topped Nelle Youel of NIU, 6-1, 6-1, before capturing the NIU flight championship with a 6-3, 6-0 win over NIU’s Sara McLaughlin.
Sophomore Caroline Bauer (Winnetka, Ill.) also represented Wisconsin in Rockford. Bauer first met up with Emily Rogers of NIU topping her 6-4, 6-2. Illinois’ Misia Kedzieraski defeated Bauer, 7-5, 6-1, in the second round. In the consolation match, Bauer fell to Juan Rosalia Tejoprayitno of Chicago State, 6-3, 6-2.
