MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women’s tennis team got a solid performance from Hannah Berner to pace the team at this weekend’s Wildcat Invitational in Evanston, Ill.
Berner scored a singles victory over Brichacova of Minnesota in the first round of the White Draw, advancing with a gritty 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 win. The senior would drop her second round match to Oklahoma’s Brahane in two sets before bouncing back to upend Lancaster of Oklahoma in her final match of the day, 7-5, 6-2.
Berner would also be a force on the doubles side of things. Though Berner and Chypyha fell to Abu Mushrefova and Hamilton of Northwestern in their first match, they rebounded to top Craig and Sharples of IUC, 9-7, in the consolation bracket. The pair would fall to Rincon-Otero and Pintusava in the consolation final, 8-6.
Lauren Burich, Pernilla Wohlstrom, Helen Rabot and Lauren Chypyha also competed for the Badgers in the singles brackets. Chypyha, coming off her Draw B singles championship at the Spartan Invitational last weekend, faltered early, dropping her first two singles matches of the tournament. The freshman responded well to adversity though, as she rebounded to drop Minnesota's Pintusava in her third match of the weekend.
The doubles combination of Wohlstrom and Burich were topped by Lawson and Mitrea of DePaul, 8-1 in the first round, and also lost their consolation match.
The Badgers will be back in action on Oct. 18, when they compete at the ITA Midwest Regional in Champaign, Ill.
