In the opening round, Burich played finished off Irina Slizovskaya of Detroit by a score of 7-6 (4), 6-1. In the second round, Burich defeated Michigan State's Olga Chernova, 6-4, 7-6 (7).
"I was really happy to see Burr advance Thursday after coming back from an injury recently," Samara said.
After getting blanked in her first and facing match point in the second frame, freshman Sydney Rider rallied back to defeat Noelle Malley of Ohio State 0-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2 in her first round match.
"It was good to see Sydney battle back after losing her first set in her first match," said Samara. "She showed the fight we're looking for."
Rider was unable to carry that early round momentum, falling 6-0, 6-1 to Jillian Rooney of Northwestern in the second round.
Anastasia Tripolskaya lost a three-set battle, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5, in her first round match to Ohio State's Ferny Angeles Paz.
