MADISON, Wis. – Lauren Chypyha was one of four Wisconsin freshmen who opened their careers on a high note, as the Ontario native earned a Draw B Singles championship in her first collegiate tournament to highlight a successful weekend for Wisconsin at the Spartan Invitational in East Lansing, Mich.

Chypyha was tested in the first round by Akron’s Angelika Jogasuria, but claimed a well-earned win in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. She then took on Courtney Wild of Ball State in the second round. After another three-set win, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, Chypyha topped Purdue’s Imogen Golder in the semifinals by a score of 7-5, 1-6, 10-3. Chypyha’s most dominating performance of the day would come when she needed it the most, as she overpowered Caterina Kiefer IPFW in two sets, 6-2, 6-0, to win the Draw B Singles championship.

Chypyha’s championship was far from the only encouraging performance for Wisconsin, as freshmen Lauren Burich, Helen Rabot and Pernilla Wohlstrom each won their first matches of the weekend.

Burich faced Ball State’s Kristel Sanders in the first round of the Draw C Singles bracket, and emerged victorious with a comeback, three-set win 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Burich would fall in two sets in the second round to Jana Knoppe before rebounding to top Allyson Westling in the consolation bracket, 6-3, 6-1.

Wohlstrom topped Caitlin Lawless 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in the Draw E Singles bracket to reach the second round, but her run would end there as she fell to Lala Hernandez Soler in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

Rabot matched Wohlstrom and Burich by defeating Maria Lazaris in her Draw D Singles opening match, 6-3, 6-1. She would lose a highly-contested match to Toledo’s Chrissy Coffman in the next round, 6-2, 6-6 (4), 7-5.

Katie Hoch was forced to retire midway through her second match while trailing 6-4, 1-2, and would withdraw from the tournament afterwards. Hoch lost her opening match to Christine Guerrazzi in Draw C Singles 6-3, 6-7, 6-0.

Senior Hanna Berner was not about to let the freshmen earn all the victories for UW, as she posted a win of her own over Toledo’s Lexy Pitt, 6-2, 6-2 in Draw A Singles before falling to Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.

In doubles action, the Berner-Chypyha pairing upended Carly Peck and Maureen Stevens in their first Draw A match, 8-5, before losing in the second round.

Burich and Wohlstrom also competed in doubles, but would lose in their first round match, 8-6 to Ramona Costea and Ana Rajkovic of Miami (Ohio). Unfazed, Burich and Wohlstrom would go on to win their next match in the consolation bracket, 8-5.

The Badgers return to the court for the Wildcat Invite in Evanston, Ill., on Oct. 12. The tournament kicks off on Friday before wrapping up on Sunday.
